TFT LCDs Enabling a Display-Based World

The thin-film–transistor liquid-crystal–display (TFT LCD) story started with American inventors at Radio Corporation of America (RCA), which developed but failed to commercialize this new technology. Then Japanese brands such as Sharp, Panasonic, and Toshiba entered the market and were able to leverage the technology for large-scale commercial manufacturing. This opened the floodgates of the display industry, as demand grew exponentially and prices were decreasing as Korean and Taiwanese manufacturers entered the market with cheaper and high-quality displays from now-household brands such as Samsung and LG. These days, Chinese manufacturers are the biggest players in TFT LCD manufacturing, and this dominance will only continue to grow, as Samsung and LG declared in early 2020 that they will stop TFT manufacturing in favor of new technologies.
