Overview

This application note describes the design of dimmable Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) with low dimming levels using the NXP UBA2026X controller family. It covers the UBA20260 for applications up to 20W using external MOSFETs and the UBA20261/2 for applications up to 18W with integrated MOSFETs. The design incorporates a Voltage Source Charge Pump (VSCP) to ensure a power factor greater than 0.6 across all dimming levels. Technical details include resonant tank parameter calculations for both 120V and 230V AC mains, autotransformer configurations to improve efficiency by reducing MOSFET current, and inductive mode preheating strategies to extend lamp life.

Use Cases

  • Dimmable CFL ballast design
  • High power factor lighting applications
  • 120V AC lighting systems
  • 230V AC lighting systems
