Overview

This reference design manual (DRM121) provides a comprehensive solution for a high-performance single-phase two-wire electricity meter. Based on the NXP MCF51EM256 microcontroller, the design incorporates the MC1322x low power node for ZigBee smart grid connectivity and the MMA7660FC 3-axis Xtrinsic accelerometer for tamper detection. The system is built on the MQX real-time operating system to support advanced power measurement algorithms and features a 5(100)A current range. Hardware implementation details include signal conditioning for voltage and current (shunt or CT), RS232 and infrared (IEC1107) interfaces, and HMI components like an LCD and user buttons.
